The Cybersecurity Threat Landscape
Ransomware has become a common attack vector, with recent attacks against Baltimore City, Georgia's Judicial Council and Administrative Office of the Courts, Lake City, FL, and Key Biscayne, FL in the news. Some attacks are the result of nation-state actions, like the June 2017 attack against Maersk which caused $250 million (or more) in damages. Other attacks are like the 2013 Target breach, which attacked point of sale servers. Attackers are becoming more sophisticated and have learned new ways to monetize their attacks. Organizations of all sizes and types need to be aware of these emerging threats. We will discuss types of cybersecurity threats organizations face today, from phishing to credential-stealing to ransomware, and look at methods to mitigate their risks.

Speaker: Mike O’Leary, Ph.D., is a professor at Towson University and the founding director of the School of Emerging Technologies. He has developed and teaches hands-on capstone courses in computer security for both undergraduate and graduate students. He has coached the Towson University Cyber Defense Club to the finals of the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
