A Simple Geospatial Approach to Identify Crash-Prone Road Segments Using Historical Data: A Case Study of Washington, DC (2009-2018)
The number of crashes on US roads and highways are increasing daily, with over 40,000 U.S. crash-related deaths in 2018. Washington DC suffered a thirteen percent increase in car crashes in 2018. This study will measure the trend of the severity of the crashes (fatal, major and minor) that have occurred in the last ten years in Washington DC. The aim is to identify the frequency of the occurrence of each type of accident and find the most crash-prone road segments in Washington DC. The data is collected from the open data source of District of Columbia. A frequency analysis in ArcGIS identified the total number of crashes in each road segment and rank the roads into low to high crash-prone classes. Finally, the results show the four most accident-prone road segments to be 1. Georgia Avenue NW, 2. Massachusetts Avenue NW, 3. North Capitol Street, and 4. New York Avenue NW.
