What is serverless computing? It is a term that gets thrown around as a buzzword frequently, but ranges from Relational Databases hosted in a cloud environment to Function as a Service (FaaS), where a software engineer can develop applications without needing to worry about building and maintaining the infrastructure usually necessary to create these applications.

Serverless computing (more specifically, in this presentation, FaaS), can have significant benefits over traditional application deployment methods, including higher stability and availability, isolation from neighboring programs with conflicting dependencies, reduced cost, increased performance for more regions across the globe, and increased redundancy in the event of catastrophe. However, many GIS organizations are not taking full advantage of these benefits.

In this talk, I will discuss these concepts, the benefits of not needing to manage your own servers, and give a demonstration and how-to on deployment of serverless, cloud-based GIS applications using Amazon Web Services' Lamdba, s3, and Fargate services.
