The idea of a 'Smart City' refers to a Data Driven City, which theoretically would fully exploit all the areas of data science - from data visualization to predictive analytics and everything in between to solve problems of day to day city/county operations and to prepare our cities/governments for the future. Because of the gradual integration of machine learning algorithms and other 'data science' tools into GIS (which itself is an area of data science) - GIS is becoming more and more powerful that could be exploited for 'smart city' initiatives.

This presentation will discuss the opportunities and appropriateness of GIS to make our cities and governments smarter.
