Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for maintaining over 5,300 properties owned by the Mayor and City Council (MCC). Historically, the City relied on spreadsheets to manage this work which presented challenges and introduced inefficiencies. Recognizing the need for improvement, DPW officially implemented the Proactive Mowing program, or ProMow, in the spring of 2018.

By leveraging the work order data from Cityworks and the asset’s spatial information with Microsoft’s Power BI, an interactive web-based dashboard providing real-time analytics was developed. Aptly named the ProMow Dashboard, the application allowed customized results based on the needs of responsible parties throughout the Department, while providing access permissions based on the individual’s role.

The ProMow Dashboard has proved to be one of the most valuable assets driving this program. It has provided insight that Cityworks or spatial data alone could not have done. The dashboard displays overall program performance, down to the productivity of the individual cleaning crews, in an interactive and easy to digest way while saving decisions makers time. Although the program has only been around for one cleaning season it has brought the average number or lots cleaned per crew, per day from 10 up to 21, more than doubling productivity.
