Drone laser scanning, or UAV-based lidar, is an exciting new platform for lidar remote sensing that provides ultra-high resolution point clouds (greater than 400 points per square meter) of the environment. This mini-workshop will provide a brief overview of drone laser scanning and highlight some of the differences between drones and other traditional lidar platforms such as aerial and terrestrial. It will then provide hands-on training of lidar data processing with ArcGIS and LAStools using real-life drone lidar data. Topics include lidar data classification to determine ground and vegetation (through automated algorithms and manual methods), lidar data rasterization to produce digital terrain models, digital surface models, and canopy height models, creating lidar extent masks, and other common lidar data products. The mini-workshop will also demonstrate how to develop simple data processing pipelines using ArcGIS Model Builder and Python scripting to help automate these workflows.
