Update: link to presentation.
Recreational trail data is useful for understanding human transportation in recreational areas and to provide accurate trail maps. Trails that run deep in the woods are difficult to digitize using traditional cartographic methods. Dense tree cover interferes with GPS signals, making accurate ground survey challenging. Trails are hard to see in a typical heads-up-digitizing environment using leaf off imagery. However, the presenter devised a method to find these trails using a combination of freely available LiDAR data and open Strava heat maps. This presentation covers these methods with the goal of interpolating the precise geometry of off-road trails and integrating it into the OpenStreetMap project.
