This course introduces attendees to the world of big data geoprocessing in the context of free and open source software. For the class you will learn how to load, prepare (pre-process), analyze, and present really large, nasty datasets. In the morning we’ll work together with some smaller datasets to help you understand the concepts and processes, and in the afternoon we’ll finish the class with some very large databases. Some of the concepts you’ll be introduced to are spatial databases, spatial indexing, spatial SQL, statistical and spatial procedures to summarize data, and the concepts of distributed and parallel processing. In the afternoon, we will harness the power of each computer in the room to process a really large data set. This is an advanced workshop, and not for novices. On the other hand, you don’t have to be a Mensa member, either. Rather, it is geared toward GIS analysts who are comfortable using GIS software like QGIS or ArcGIS. The course only has 15 available spots due to the deep nature of the subject matter.
